Black Creek Porter
Posted: Sat Feb 18 2012
This is an expectational porter! Not too
bitter, not to malty. This is what a porter should taste
like. And it is brewed in a Pioneer Village; you cannot get
cooler than that.
Muskoka Mad Tom IPA
Posted: Thu Sep 8 2011
Muskoka
Mad Tom IPA has shown up in Ottawa at both the LCBO and The Beer Store.
This is a high alcohol (6.4%), dry hopped beer. They say it has a
"citrus undertow" and I would agree. After you get over the initial
hit of hops, the citrus is noticeable.
If you don't like hops, or the accompanying bitterness, you will not
like this beer. It has become my newest favorite beer.
Kichesippi Craft Beer 101 'Class'
Posted: Thu Aug 11 2011
On Tuesday, Kichesippi Beer Co. co-owner Paul Meek hosted a
class so we could learn more about our favorite beverage:
beer! The event was put on by Savvy Company.
Paul is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic when it comes to
beer. You can't cover everything in a 2 ½ hour class,
but he touched on just about everything. Since it was held
in the brewery, we also got a brewery tour.
This class focused on local beers for the taste tests. We
tasted six beers all together: two each from Kichesippi,
Cameron's, and Clocktower brewpub.
The atmosphere was very relaxed and fun. Questions where not
only allowed but encouraged. And since Paul owns a brewery,
he can speak about the trade offs that must be made in
making beer.
The class was good for novices and experts alike.
Kichesippi Growlers
Posted: Sat Mar 5 2011
Went to Kichesippi Brewing and got a couple of
growlers of Kichesippi Natural Blonde. A growler is 64 oz
(5+ beers). Click on the image for a larger version. They
pour it right there in front of you. It has a screw top so
you can pour one then close the growler. There is a $4
deposit on the growler.
If you can only have one beer a day, this is the one
to get!
Kichesippi Buys Heritage
Posted: Wed Dec 15 2010
Heading really says it all. The deal closed
yesterday, yeah I am a bit late. Kichesippi plans to keep
all the Heritage staff and beers. Scotch Irish Brewing is
not involved in the deal. Heritage was already brewing the
Kichesippi beer on a contract basis.
Lawn Chair Beer
Posted: Fri Nov 19 2010
Went to Irene's Pub with the guys
to enjoy the Thursday night blues jam and have a few
beers. While I was there I tried the Hop City Brewing
Company's Lawn Chair beer. Lawn Chair beer is not
currently shown on their web site but is an excellent wheat
beer.
Hop City brewing is owned by Moosehead and is
Niagara Falls Brewing Company's new name.
But the *real* reason I am posting is that I won a
cool Lawn Chair shirt!
Beau's beer now golden!

Beau's
won both the best regularly produced beer for Lug Tread and
was named best microbrewery in Ontario at the Golden Taps
awards.

Best Bar for Cask Ale in Ontario (presented in partnership with CASK!): Bar Volo

Editor's Circle Award: Drinkvine
Editor's Circle Award: Milos Kral & Chancey Smith's
Editor's Circle Award: Brian Morin & beerbistro
Best Beer of the Festival: Church Key Black IPA
The Golden Taps awards are based on web voting, so it
really is a peoples choice award. But it also means the awards
are very Toronto-centric. Most of the beers mentioned
are not available in Ottawa. But I have tried the Granite
Brewery's dry hopped ale in Halifax and it was the best beer I
have ever had.
Kichesippi Beer
Co. Update!
Posted: Sat Jul 17 2010
Last night I went to the Elmdale Tavern to see
Rocket Rached and the Fat City 8. Great band! Four piece horn
section! And what did they have on tap but the Natural
Blonde. Excellent beer, well worth trying out.
Kichesippi Beer Co.
Posted: Fri Jul 9 2010
Yet another beer company in Ottawa, Kichesippi Beer Co.! On April
29th, the first batch was ready. They currently have
only one beer, a pale ale called Natural Blonde brewed by Heritage
Brewing. It is only available on tap. I haven't tried it
yet, but plan to do so soon.
Light Beer with Taste

Posted: Fri Jul 9 2010
Looking for a light beer with taste?
Heritage Brewing
brews Stuart's Natural Session Ale, an ordinary that puts a
lot of full beers to shame. And at 3.7%, it is definitely
light.
Hogsback Brewing Company
Posted: Sat Jun 26 2010
Had a gig at the Kanata Sports Club
and they had Hogsback Brewing
Company lager on draft. I had not heard of the brewery
even though they are based in Ottawa! I am not really a lager
fan, but this was a perfectly drinkable beer.
Propeller Beer in Ontario
Posted: Tue Jan 5 2010
Why didn't anybody tell me? Propeller ESB is
available in Ottawa! Just picked up 12 at the LCBO on Richmond
near Kirkwood. The teller said it was popular, so people are
holding out on me. This is a great bitter and you really owe
it to yourself to try it.
Pub Italia Beer Bible
Posted: Tue Dec 29 2009
I am a huge fan of Pub
Italia on Preston Street here in Ottawa. When I noticed
they had their Beer Bible online, I had to grab a copy and
mark it up to see which of the beers I have tried.
You
can see my copy of the Beer
Bible. So far I am at 121 of 187 = 65%. I am not fond of
lagers, so the lager section brings me down, I am at 73%
without it.
Heritage Brewing News
Posted: Tue Dec 29 2009
I know this is old news, but I am still excited that Heritage
Brewing
has moved very close to where I live! And since Heritage
Brewing and Scotch Irish Brewing have merged, I can get my Sgt
Major's beer close by!
The staff at the store are very
friendly. If you go there, tell them "Sean sent me!". They
won't know who you are talking about, but it is fun to say.
Think globally, drink locally.
My top half dozen or so favorite Ottawa pubs. This is a very subjective list. I consider atmosphere very important in a pub.
An Honorable mention to the Heart and Crown. A good pub but very busy. It is sometimes impossible to get served, even when not busy.
If you are stuck out in Kanata. The Glen is a good Scottish pub.
If you have a favorite pub I have missed, send me an email. I am always willing to try a new pub! It is a tough job, there may even be beer involved, but somebody has to do it.
This is not a complete list. These are breweries I have enjoyed the beers from.
Again, this is not a complete list (I hope). These are breweries I have enjoyed the beers from.
